i got a hose end that’s 1-1/16-12 JIC male, will this union let me tie into a 3/4-16 JIC male on the other side?

For connecting two SAE 37 degree flare JIC male ends with different thread sizes, this straight steel union is set up exactly for that. One side is 1-1/16-12 male JIC 37 degree flare, and the other side is 3/4-16 male JIC 37 degree flare.

got a 1-1/16-12 JIC fitting on my hydraulic line but need to step it down to 3/4-16 JIC on the other end -- will this adapter handle that straight connection without needing any extra pieces in between?

That's exactly what this part does. It's a straight union adapter with a 1-1/16-12 male JIC 37-degree flare on one end and a 3/4-16 male JIC 37-degree flare on the other. Both ends use the standard SAE 37-degree flare seating, so as long as your mating fittings are female JIC on both sides, this drops right in without any additional components.

Correct, this Eaton Aeroquip adapter is designed to connect two SAE 37-degree flared fittings. It's a straight union adapter.
