does this fitting work without a mandrel during installation, or do I need to track one down before I get started?

No mandrel needed with this one. It meets PTF SAE Short specs, which means the crimp process goes straight on without that extra tooling step. For shops trying to keep things moving, that tends to simplify the whole assembly process quite a bit.
