Got a tight spot on a marine hydraulic line where I need to change direction, does this adapter actually swivel, or is that just the thread style being described?

The swivel function is real. The female NPT side rotates, which lets you get the fitting seated and oriented without twisting the line attached to it. That's a big help in cramped installs where you can't easily spin the hose or tube to align things. The 90 degree elbow takes care of the direction change, and the swivel handles the clocking so you're not fighting the assembly.

Will this fitting work with regular pipe threads, or does it need special stuff?

This adapter is designed with one NPSM internal pipe swivel end and one NPTF external pipe end, so it should work with standard NPT threads.

Built as a 90 degree elbow adapter, it connects a 1/8-27 female NPT swivel end (NPSM internal pipe swivel) to a 1/8-27 male NPT end (NPTF external pipe). It is a steel Eaton Aeroquip 2047 series adapter.
