what industries is this adapter actually built for? seen a lot of adapters marketed as "universal" but they end up being junk in anything demanding

Will this adapter work to connect a standard NPT pipe to something with a SAE O-ring port?

That's exactly what it's for. This adapter will let you connect a 3/8-18 female NPT pipe to a 3/4-16 male SAE O-ring boss.
