trying to hook a 1/2-14 female npt line over to a 7/8-14 female jic, is that what this adapter is?

Function-wise it bridges those two connection types in a straight adapter: one end is 1/2-14 female NPTF internal pipe thread, and the other end is a 7/8-14 female JIC 37 degree flare swivel.

Got a hydraulic line running NPT on one end and JIC on the other, does this adapter handle that straight through without needing extra fittings in between?

That's exactly what this one's built for. The 2242-8-10S connects a 1/2-14 female NPT port directly to a 7/8-14 female JIC 37 degree flare swivel in a straight configuration, so you're not stacking extra adapters to make the transition work. The swivel end gives you some rotational flexibility during installation, which helps a lot when you're working in tight spots and can't easily rotate the line itself.
