fitting goes from 3/4-14 NPT female to 1-1/16-12 JIC female -- is that right for connecting two female-threaded lines without needing extra couplers in between?

That's exactly what this adapter does. One end accepts a 3/4-14 female NPT connection and the other end is a 1-1/16-12 female JIC 37 degree flare swivel, all in a straight configuration. The swivel on the JIC side gives you some rotational flexibility during installation, which helps a lot when you're working in a tight spot and can't easily spin the line itself. It's part of the Eaton Aeroquip 2242 series and is built for hydraulic, instrumentation, and chemical processing systems.
