trying to hook two 1/2 npt lines together but need to turn the corner, is this the right fitting?

Made for exactly that kind of change in direction, it’s a 90 degree elbow adapter with 1/2-14 female NPTF threads on both ends, so it connects two 1/2-14 male NPT/NPTF threaded pieces while turning the run.

both ends are female NPT on this one, right? just want to make sure before i order -- had a bad experience mixing up male and female fittings on a previous job

Both ports are 1/2-14 female NPT, so you'd be threading male NPT fittings into each end. The elbow gives you a 90 degree turn between those two connections, which comes in handy when you're working in tight spots and need to change fluid flow direction without a lot of extra hardware in the way.
