clamp says 6.25 to 6.50 inch ID -- does that mean it'll fit right at 6.25 or do I need some wiggle room on the hose end?

That range covers both ends, so a hose or fitting that measures right at 6.25 inches will fall within the clamp's working range. Same goes for anything up to 6.50 inches. You're not looking for wiggle room so much as making sure your actual outside diameter of the sleeve or hose end lands somewhere between those two numbers before you torque it down.

got a hose that's right around 6 and a half inches inside, will this clamp still grab it good?

Fit is based on inside diameter, and this one covers a 6.25 inch to 6.50 inch ID range, so anything in that window is what it is made to clamp down on.
