got a 2" ID hose here, what thread does the other end of this nipple have?

On the threaded side, it is a 1-1/2-11-1/2 male NPT. The hose end is a 2.00 inch ID hose barb.

this fitting won't work on air lines, right? got a buddy who tried using something similar for a pneumatic setup and it didn't end well

Correct, and that's an important one to flag. Combination nipples like this one are not rated for compressible products, meaning air, nitrogen, and similar gases are off the table, especially at 2 inches. That restriction kicks in at 1-1/4 inch and above, so this size falls well within the no-go zone for any pressurized gas application. Stick to liquid transfer duties and you'll be in the right territory.
