got a 1-1/4 inch hose I'm trying to connect up to a threaded port on a pump, will this nipple bridge that gap or do I need something different?

For a 1.25 inch ID hose on one end and a 1-1/4-11-1/2 NPT male threaded connection on the other, that's exactly what this fitting handles. The barbed end seats into the hose and the male NPT threads into a standard female port. As long as your hose ID and port thread size match those specs, you're good to go.

this fitting work for liquid transfer on a suction line, or is it just for discharge setups?

Both actually. The RST-15 is rated for low pressure discharge and suction service, so it covers either side of the pump as long as you're moving compatible liquids. Just keep in mind the working pressure isn't a fixed number on this one. It shifts depending on your hose construction, how many clamps you're running, where they're placed, and what you're pumping. Size up your hose assembly as a whole rather than leaning on a single pressure figure.
