trying to hook an ORB port to a JIC hose end, is this the right kind of adapter or am i mixing stuff up

For that ORB to JIC transition, it is the right style. One side is a 9/16-18 male SAE O-Ring Boss with straight threads, and the other side is a 9/16-18 male JIC 37 degree flare, so it is meant to bridge those two connection types in a hydraulic line.

Got a JIC line coming off a hydraulic valve and need to tie into a port with straight thread ORB. This the right piece for that?

That's exactly the application this adapter handles. One end is a 9/16-18 male SAE O-Ring Boss, which threads into a straight thread ORB port, and the other end is a 9/16-18 male JIC 37-degree flare, which connects to your JIC fitting or hose end. Both threads are the same 9/16-18 size, so you're converting connection type, not thread size. At 1.3 inches long, it keeps things tight in close-quarter hydraulic connections situations too.
