does this adapter need any kind of thread sealant or tape when you put it on, or does it seal up on its own?

No sealant needed on this one. The JIC 37-degree flare end seals by metal-to-metal contact when the fitting is torqued down, and the NPT threads on the other side seal through thread engagement. You can skip the tape and compound and go straight to installation.

got a hose end that’s 1/2-14 male NPT. will this adapter get me over to a 1-1/16-12 male JIC 37 flare without any funny business

For a straight pipe-to-flare hookup, it matches those exact thread callouts: 1/2-14 male NPT on one end and 1-1/16-12 male JIC 37 degree flare on the other. It is also sized for a 0.75 inch tube O.D. on the JIC side.
