got a line stepping down from 3/8 to 1/4 JIC and need something to tie them together without a bunch of extra fittings in the way, this what I'd be looking at?

For a straight reducing union between 9/16-18 and 7/16-20 male JIC 37 degree flare ends, yes, that's exactly what this fitting does.
