trying to swap out an elbow on my line. is this one the kind that goes from 1/4-18 female NPT over to a 7/16-20 male JIC flare?

Built for that exact thread change, it has a 1/4-18 female NPT on one side and a 7/16-20 male JIC 37 degree flare on the other, in a 90 degree elbow.

Got a tight spot on a hydraulic line where I need to make a 90-degree turn, will the NPT side thread into a standard 1/4-18 female port on my equipment, or is this fitting itself the female NPT end?

The NPT side on this fitting is the female end, so it receives a 1/4-18 male NPT thread from your equipment or line. The other end is a 7/16-20 male JIC with a 37-degree flare, which connects to a matching female JIC fitting on your hose or tubing. The 90-degree angle is built into the body, so once it's threaded in, your line exits at a right angle without needing any additional bends.
