fitting says G 1/2 BSPP thread -- does that mean it uses a face seal or is it more of a tapered thread deal?

BSPP stands for British Standard Parallel Pipe, so the thread itself is straight, not tapered. The sealing on this fitting comes from the 60 degree cone swivel, which mates against a corresponding cone seat on the port side. That cone contact is what creates the seal, not thread engagement or thread sealant. No tape, no paste needed on assembly.
