Got a cylinder with a 1.88 inch rod that needs a new wiper, will this one fit right, or do I need to worry about matching up that OD too?

For a proper fit you need both dimensions to line up. The rod diameter on this one is 1.875 inches, and the outer diameter comes in at 2.25 inches. Both of those need to match your housing bore and rod size for it to seat correctly and do its job keeping contaminants out. If your bore is cut for a 2.25 OD and your rod is running 1.875, you're good to go.

What's the deal with the temp range on this wiper ring? Need it to hold up in some pretty hot conditions.
