trying to hook a G 1/2-14 male line into a 3/8-18 nptf port. is that what this adapter is for?

For tying those two thread styles together, this straight adapter is set up exactly that way. Side 1 is male BSPP with a G 1/2 - 14 callout, and Side 2 is female NPT with a 3/8 - 18 NPTF callout.

Got a hydraulic line coming off a British-spec pump with a G 1/2 thread, need to tie it into some 3/8 NPT fittings on the American side. this adapter gonna bridge that gap?

That's what this one's built for. One end is a male BSPP G 1/2 - 14 thread, the other is a female 3/8 - 18 NPTF. So your British-spec side threads right in, and your 3/8 NPT line connects on the other end. Stainless construction from Adaptall, straight configuration, 41mm long. Should drop right into that kind of mixed-standard setup without any headaches.
