Is this a direct drop-in replacement for the original Permco shaft protector, or is there any fitment I need to worry about?

Built as a direct replacement part, so it swaps in without modification. The part number SP-1000-8 matches the original Permco spec, which takes the guesswork out of ordering. As long as you're replacing the same component on a compatible Permco unit, you should be good to go straight out of the box.

got a Permco pump with a chewed up shaft area, is this protector meant to keep parts from wearing out so quick?

Meant to protect hydraulic components from damage and wear, the Permco shaft protector is used as a safeguard on the shaft area so you are not beating up the surrounding parts as fast.
