got a tight spot. is that “close” nipple actually 1 inch long end to end?

Length on this one is 1.00 inch, and it has 1/4-18 male NPT threads.

The 1.00 inch length is the close nipple configuration for this part. A close nipple is cut to the shortest practical threaded length, which is what you're getting here. Both ends carry the 1/4-18 male NPT thread, so it's about as compact as a nipple fitting gets for this pipe size.
