does this nipple use standard NPT threads, or is it some kinda special thread size i gotta worry about matching up?

Standard 1/4-18 NPT threads on both ends, so it'll mate up with any fitting or valve that takes a quarter-inch NPT connection. That's one of the most common thread specs in industrial hydraulic lines, so sourcing matching components shouldn't be a headache.
