what kind of fluid does this motor take, and is there anything special about how you're supposed to start it up the first time?

Premium quality anti-wear hydraulic fluid is what you want running through it. On the break-in, run the motor for about an hour at roughly 30% of rated pressure before you put it under full load. Make sure the motor is filled with fluid before you apply any load at all. Skipping that step is where a lot of early wear problems start.
