The RSS502 is built for confined spaces anywhere from 3.5 inches up to about 11 and 7/16 inches, so 4 inches puts you well within range. The low collapsed height and heavy-duty return spring are part of what makes it practical in those kinds of situations. The grooved piston top also helps keep your load from shifting once you've got it positioned, which matters a lot when you're working with limited room to maneuver.

For tight clearances, this RSS502 is meant for confined areas from 3 1/2 inches up to 11 7/16 inches of clearance. The extended height is 7.375 inches, and it uses a heavy duty return spring to help keep the collapsed height low.
