got a 1/4-18 female NPT port but the gauge line is 1/8-27 male NPT. is this the little adapter i need?

For that kind of size change, this adapter is made to go from 1/4-18 FNPT on one side to 1/8-27 MNPT on the other, so it fits the job of stepping a 1/4 female NPT connection down to a 1/8 male NPT connection.

Got a 1/4 female port on my instrument panel and need to step it down to 1/8 male, this the right piece for that?

That's what this adapter is built for. The female end threads in at 1/4-18 NPT and the male end comes out at 1/8-27 NPT, so you're going from the larger port down to the smaller connection. Standard tapered NPT threads on both ends, which means you get a tight, leak-free seal without a lot of fuss during installation.
