got a 1-1/2 inch hose, is this clamp actually sized for that or am i reading it wrong

The inside diameter on this preformed band clamp is 1.50 inch. It is a JS type smooth ID clamp, so the inside diameter is uniform and gap-free to give you an even clamping surface.

does this clamp work without any special tools or do I need a crimper to get it seated right

No crimping or hammering needed. The clamp locks into place with a single lever movement, so standard crimping tools aren't part of the install process. That's one of the main advantages of this preformed style over traditional band clamps.
