Can this pump handle thick fluids, or am I gonna run into trouble?

Normal operation is best with fluids in the 85 SUS to 297 SUS range. You might see issues outside that.

pump says CW rotation on it -- can that be switched if my setup needs to run the other direction?

Rotation on these Salami gear pumps can be changed. You reverse the positions of the drive shaft and driven shaft and rotate the front flange, and that flips the direction. Just keep in mind the pump ships standard in clockwise rotation, so any change would need to be done before installation.
