pump shifts into high pressure on its own, or do you have to do something to make that happen?

It shifts automatically. Once the pump makes contact with the load, it moves into the high-pressure stage without you having to flip a switch or adjust anything. That's part of what makes the two-speed setup worth it on longer jobs. Low pressure gets you there fast, high pressure does the heavy lifting, and the transition happens on its own.

Built for single-acting cylinders, the P59L gives you two pressure stages: up to 850 PSI in low-pressure mode, then it shifts into the high-pressure stage and will go up to 10,000 PSI once the load is contacted.
