pump automatically shifts to high pressure on its own, or do i have to do something to make that happen?

Once the pump makes contact with the load, it shifts into the high pressure stage on its own. No manual switching needed. The two-speed mechanism handles that transition automatically, which is what cuts down on the number of handle strokes you'd otherwise be dealing with.

This P Series hand pump is designed specifically for use with single-acting cylinders.
