What's the deal with that fill cap seal? Is it just to keep crud out of the oil, or does it do more than that?

That fill cap seal actually doubles as a safety valve. It's there to keep the reservoir from getting over-pressurized.

got a job where there ain’t much free travel before it starts working. is this P300 the kind of hand pump meant for that?

For setups with little or no free travel, the P Series two speed hand pump is called out as a good fit. It also has an all metal build and a formed metal handle to cut down on flex and operator fatigue.
