got a single-acting cylinder on a little press. will this hand pump run it, or is it for something else

For single acting cylinders, this pump is a match. It is a two speed, single acting hand pump that automatically shifts into the high pressure stage when it hits the load, with up to 325 PSI in low pressure mode and up to 10,000 PSI in high pressure mode.

pump shifts into high pressure on its own, or do you gotta manually switch it over?

Automatic on this one. Once the pump makes contact with the load, it shifts itself into the high pressure stage without you doing anything. Low pressure gets you there fast, and then it transitions up to handle the actual lifting. No levers to flip or knobs to turn for that part of the operation.
