what's the deal with these BSPP o-rings, are they the same as the ones used on NPT fittings or is this a whole different animal?

Pretty different, actually. NPT threads seal by wedging the threads together as you tighten, so the thread form itself does the work. BSPP threads are parallel, meaning they don't taper, and the thread engagement alone won't stop fluid from leaking. The o-ring sits against the port face and that's where the seal happens. Swapping one type for the other won't work, so if your fittings or adaptors are marked BSPP, you need an o-ring matched to that spec, which is exactly what this one is sized for.

Just want to make sure, this is for a 1 inch BSPP fitting, right?

That's correct. This O-ring is sized to fit standard 1-inch BSPP port faces.
