Does this male half swap out with the Aeroquip FD40 Series or am I gonna need an adapter to make it work?

No adapter needed. The FD40 Series is one of the direct interchanges for this coupling, along with the Aeroquip FD41 Series (Aro 210) and Parker Automotive male halves. The thread is 1/2-14 Male NPT, so as long as your mating connection matches that, you should be good to go right out of the box.

Will this work with a standard air compressor setup? I'm using Aeroquip FD40 series stuff now.

This Eaton / Aeroquip Hansen 500 Series plug is designed to interchange directly with Aeroquip FD40 Series couplings, as well as FD41 Series (Aro 210) and Parker (Automotive) male halves. It meets MIL-C-4109 standards for industrial interchangeability.
