Does this thing actually bridge ORFS and JIS ports, or do I need some kind of intermediate fitting to make that work?

Straight conversion, no intermediate piece needed. One end is a 1/4" male ORFS with a 9/16-18 UNF thread, the other is a 1/4" female JIS running G 1/4-19. You thread the ORFS side into your JIS port and you're done. Steel construction, straight configuration, 32.8mm long so it keeps the overall hydraulic connections fairly compact even in tighter spots.

got a hose end that’s 9/16-18 ORFS male, will this adapter let me hook it into a G 1/4-19 JIS female port?

Functionally, it is a straight thread adapter that converts between those two standards: one side is 1/4 inch male ORFS with a 9/16-18 UNF thread, and the other side is 1/4 inch female JIS with a G 1/4-19 thread.

Functionally, yes, this adapter allows you to connect a 1/4" male ORFS port (common in the US) to a 1/4" female JIS port (found on some Japanese equipment).
