got a 1/4 NPT male port on a hydraulic block and need to tie into a -4 SAE O-ring female fitting. this the right adapter for that?

That's what this one's built for. One end is 1/4-18 male NPT, which threads into your NPT port on the block. The other end is 7/16-20 female SAE O-ring Boss, which is your standard -4 ORB straight thread connection. Both thread sizes line up with what you described, so you're good to go.

It bridges those two thread types in one straight steel adapter. One side is 1/4-18 male NPT and the other side is 7/16-20 female SAE O-Ring Boss (straight thread O-ring), which is commonly called a #4 FORB x #4 MP.

That's exactly what this piece is built for. One end is a 1/4-18 male NPT thread, the other is a 7/16-20 female SAE O-Ring Boss. So if your line terminates in a 1/4 NPT male and your port accepts a 7/16-20 ORB male, this adapter bridges that gap straight through with no angle or offset.

For that hookup, it’s a straight steel adapter with a 1/4-18 male NPT on one side and a 7/16-20 female SAE O-Ring Boss (ORB) straight thread on the other, so it’s meant to bridge NPT to a #4 ORB connection.
