Trying to hook a 1/4-18 male pipe thread into an ORB port, is this the right adapter or am I mixing up sizes?

For that setup, the ends match up as 1/4-18 male NPTF on one side and 9/16-18 female SAE O-Ring Boss on the other. It is a straight pipe to straight thread O-ring adapter, so it is meant for exactly that kind of NPTF to SAE ORB connection.

this Eaton Aeroquip adapter's made to do just that: hook up a 1/4-18 male NPT to a 9/16-18 female SAE O-ring boss. It's a straight adapter, so it'll keep everything lined up.

Got a line running 1/4 NPT male off a pump and need to tie into a 9/16-18 SAE O-ring port on a valve block. this adapter gonna work for that straight up?

That's exactly the conversion this fitting handles. The male end is 1/4-18 NPT and the female end accepts a 9/16-18 SAE O-ring Boss straight thread, so it bridges those two thread types in a straight configuration without any angle. It's part of the Eaton Aeroquip 2246 Series, which covers NPTF external pipe to SAE O-ring Boss internal adapters. As long as your port and your line match those two thread sizes, you're set.
