Banjo fittings work by letting fluid flow through a hollow bolt into a port that sits at a right angle to the line. A standard inline fitting connects end to end, so when you're working in a tight spot where there just isn't room to run a straight line in and out, a banjo gives you that perpendicular entry point without fighting the geometry of the surrounding hardware.
