hose says it goes down to -40 degrees -- we run equipment outside through the winter and I just wanna make sure this thing ain't gonna get stiff and crack on us when it gets real cold. that a legitimate rating or just marketing talk?

That temperature floor is a real spec, not filler. The synthetic rubber tube and textile braid construction are built to stay flexible at -40°F, so cold-weather outdoor use is exactly the kind of application this hose handles. On the upper end it's rated to 250°F, so you've got a wide working range whether it's January or July.
