Does this bushing come with any thread sealant applied, or do I need to bring my own tape and compound to the job?

No sealant is applied to the threads. The fitting ships dry, so you can use whatever thread sealant or tape you already have on hand. That gives you full control over the sealing method, which a lot of folks prefer when working with specific fluid systems or shop standards.

got a 2 inch female pipe thread and need to step it down to 1-1/2. is this the right bushing for that?

For reducing a 2 inch threaded opening down to 1-1/2 inch, that is exactly what a 2 x 1-1/2 hex bushing is meant to do. It is threaded to the American Briggs Standard for pipe threads, so it is built for standard pipe thread connections.
