Does this bushing use standard pipe threads, or is it somethin proprietary I'd need special tooling for?

Ward Manufacturing threads these to the American Briggs Standard for pipe threads, so standard pipe threading tools and fittings will work just fine. No special tooling or adapters needed.

got a 1/2 inch female port but my line is 1/4. is this the bushing that steps it down?

Built for reducing a 1/2 inch threaded opening down to 1/4 inch using a hex bushing form, so it is meant for that size change.

Will this fitting hold up okay if I'm usin' it for somethin' besides just water, like maybe for runnin' some air lines?

It's made from high tensile iron, so it should be plenty durable for air lines, as long as you're within the pressure limits for iron pipe.
