threads on this thing, are they American standard pipe threads or something proprietary?

American Briggs Standard for pipe threads, same as what you'd find on standard NPT fittings across most industrial pipe work. Each opening is also chamfered, so getting it started on the threads without crossthreading is a lot more forgiving than with plain-cut fittings.
