got a 1/2 inch black iron line and need to branch it off, is this the right kind of tee?

For splitting one run into two, a 1/2 inch female tee is the standard fitting for that job. All three openings are female and threaded to the American Briggs Standard, so it is meant to mate with 1/2 inch male pipe threads.

American Briggs Standard threading is the same specification used across common iron pipe fittings, so yes, it'll mate up with standard threaded pipe without any adapter needed.
