got a 1 inch line but need to step it down to half inch. is this the right kind of fitting for that

For stepping down pipe size, a 1 x 1/2 inch bell reducer is meant to transition from a 1 inch connection to a 1/2 inch connection while keeping a solid, close-fitting joint.

Does this reducer have chamfered openings, or am I gonna be fighting it during install?

Both openings come chamfered from the factory, so threading it up goes a good bit smoother than fittings without that treatment. Less fussing around during assembly, which adds up when you're working through a bunch of connections.
