Flow control valves like this one allow air to move freely in one direction while metering it in the other. So if you need a cylinder to extend slow but retract fast, you'd plumb it so the controlled direction handles the movement you want to pace. The four-stage tapered needle gives you a wide range of fine adjustments rather than a coarse on-off feel, which makes dialing in a specific speed a lot more repeatable than a standard needle valve.
