These gladhand couplings, do they need any kind of special wrench or tool to hook up and disconnect, or can you just work them by hand out in the field?

No tools required at all. The design lets you connect and disconnect them by hand, which makes swapping things out in the field a whole lot faster when you don't have a toolbox sitting right next to you.
