Need something that’ll meter flow one way but let it return free the other way. is that what this valve does?

Built for one direction metering and the opposite direction free flow, it lets you control speed or flow in one direction while allowing unrestricted return flow the other way.

Reckon this'd work alright with a low-pressure hydraulic setup on my old log splitter?

This brass body valve is best suited for pneumatic systems and lower pressure hydraulic systems, where it can reliably handle the flow. Just keep in mind the 2000 PSI maximum operating pressure.

what's the temperature range on this valve? got a spot where it gets pretty cold in winter and warm as blazes come July

Rated from -15F up to 200F, so both ends of that range should cover you just fine for seasonal outdoor or shop conditions.
