Is this check valve suitable for hydraulic systems?

Yes, steel valves like this one are specifically intended for use in hydraulic systems. Brass versions are for pneumatic or lower pressure applications.

Lets oil flow freely one direction, then shuts off tight in the opposite direction so you do not get backflow.

does this valve work for standard hydraulic lines runnin at high pressure, or is it more of a light duty thing?

Rated for up to 5000 PSI and 10 GPM, this one holds up in full hydraulic service without issue. The steel body is built for that kind of demand, unlike the brass version which is better suited to pneumatic or lower pressure hydraulic work. Cracking pressure sits between 1 and 2.5 PSI, so it opens easy and seals back up clean once flow stops.

got a 3/8-18 npt line, is this check valve female ports on both ends or am i gonna need adapters

Both ports are female 3/8-18 NPT, so it threads onto male 3/8-18 NPT fittings on each side.
