Silicone-coated fiberglass construction like what's used in this Aeroquip sleeve is built to handle sustained radiant and convective heat, including the kind that comes off exhaust manifolds and engine components. You don't need an air gap for the sleeve to function. It's meant to go right over the hose and sit in tight spaces where routing around a heat source isn't practical. Just make sure you're using two of the FF9217-0622S clamps per hose assembly to secure the ends properly so the sleeve stays in place and doesn't shift away from the area you need protected.
