Will this fitting work with standard hydraulic hose, or do I need something special?

This swage fitting is designed for use with -04 hose, making it suitable for a range of hydraulic applications where that size is required. Just be sure your hose is rated for the pressure you're planning to run.

fitting says 7/16-20 female JIC on one end and -04 hose on the other. that right for a 1/4 inch hose hookup?

both ends line up with what you described. The port side is a 7/16-20 female JIC 37 degree flare swivel, and the hose end is sized for -04 hose, which corresponds to 1/4 inch hose. The swivel feature on the JIC end also makes it easier to get a clean connection without twisting the hose during assembly.
