Will this fitting work to adapt a 3/8" brake line to a 5/8" port?

This Brakequip fitting is designed to connect a female 3/8 NF thread to a male 5/8 NF thread, so if your brake line and port match those thread types, it should work.

trying to hook a 3/8 NF brake line to something thats 5/8 NF, is this the right adapter?

It’s made for exactly that kind of thread change. One side is a 3/8 NF female (internal) thread, and the other side is a 5/8 NF external thread so you can join mismatched brake or hydraulic connections in one fitting.

What exactly is this fitting doing, thread-wise? Like one end screws into something and the other end receives a line?

Pretty much, yeah. One end has a 3/8 NF internal thread, so a brake or hydraulic line with that thread size inserts into it. The other end carries a 5/8 NF external thread, meaning that side threads directly into a port or mating component. It lets you bridge two differently sized threaded connections without needing extra adapters in between.
