fitting says 1/2 x 20NF, is that a national fine thread or something different?

National Fine is exactly right. The 1/2 refers to the thread diameter and 20 is the thread count per inch, which is the standard NF spec. That finer pitch gives you tighter thread engagement compared to coarse thread fittings, which matters a lot in brake line work where vibration can work things loose over time.
