what's a banjo fitting exactly, and is that what this HFB384 is?

Banjo fittings get their name from their shape. The fitting has a hollow bolt that passes through a rounded, ring-shaped connector, which lets fluid flow through at an angle without the line needing to run straight. The HFB384 is exactly that style, stepping from a 3/8" opening on one end to a 1/2" opening on the other, so it works where you've got two different line sizes that need to meet up cleanly.
